"Welcome to the Travel Authorization System website"
13.41-minute animated film based on a text by Juliette Mezenc
I approached « Bienvenue sur le site web du système d’autorisation de voyage » with 3D animation based on a text proposal by Juliette Mezenc. The i84-W form serves as the basis for Juliette’s text, the site of a first detour. But simply reading this form, which is compulsory for travel to the United States of America, throws us into a surreal dimension, which in itself has the effect of a detour from reality, since, among other things, you have to declare that you are not a spy involved in sabotage projects or persecution linked to Nazi Germany and its allies. To create the images for the video, I opted for 3D capture using real photos. This technology, still in its infancy (at the time !) and approximate, deforms the captured forms while giving them a photorealistic quality. In short, it’s a distortion of reality. At the same time as the images converse with the words of Juliette’s detour through editing and 3D animation, they are also diverted from reality by the technology used to produce them. The images thus become equivocal, and a second detour may well take place at the heart of the production process, in the image of the form itself.
