"Machine_os I"
Sculpture in stainless steel
When I imagined MachineOs I, I was very much influenced by the work environment I was discovering. I’d spent 15 years making rather figurative sculptures that I cast in bronze myself. There was such a gap between the traditional sculptural approach and sculpting with software in the 3D space of my machine that my new tools for making volumes became a subject of work. I find it interesting and fruitful when a practice reflects on itself. Thus was born the MachineOs series. For MachineOs I, I combined two very different approaches to 3D volume. One for the base, which evokes a complex bone shape, and another for the part resting on the base, which comes from the mechanical world. The result is a kind of camera whose true function we don’t really know, while wondering (and doubting very much) whether it’s not an autonomous organism that’s going to start moving by itself !
